August’s FREE speaker is Dr. Douglas Palmer. Dr. Palmer will speak about the history of brewing and distilling in Tuscarawas County and Northeast Ohio. He will connect the history of brewing with the Society of Separatists. The Separatists brewed their own beer in the village with malt and hops raised in Zoar. September’s FREE speaker is Dr. Philip E. Webber. Dr. Webber will speak about the reactions of Separatist young men to the Civil War. The Separatists believed in leading a pacifist life in accordance with their principles, but some of the village's men decided to break tradition and join the Union Army. Visit Historic Zoar October 5-8 for a festival of history, culture, and coming home. New for Zoar’s Bicentennial Celebration, the festival will include activities celebrating the legacy and history of the Society of Separatists of Zoar. Throughout the week, enjoy speakers, a photo collection of Zoar’s heritage, German music, and more. Winter is just around the corner, and the people of Zoar need your help to prepare. On Friday, October 6, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., students can experience a variety of hands-on historical activities, such as canning, soap carving, tinsmithing, and more. Historical demonstrations around the town will help students learn about life in the 1850s. Cost for this event is $4/student and includes all activities. One adult per group is free, and each additional adult is $6. Reservations are required.
