About Volunteering

Volunteers are the heart of Historic Zoar Village. They welcome guests, care for gardens, support events, assist with programs, help in the Zoar Store, share history, and provide the hands-on support that keeps the village active and inviting.
Whether you love history, gardening, education, special events, hospitality, archives, demonstrations, or simply lending a hand, there is a place for you at Zoar. Volunteers of many interests and skill levels help bring the village to life for thousands of visitors each year.

Volunteer Opportunities May Include

  • Greeting guests and sharing information in historic buildings.
  • Helping with ticket sales, visitor services, and the Zoar Store.
  • Assisting with special events, festivals, tours, and educational programs.
  • Maintaining gardens and landscaped areas.
  • Supporting collections, archives, office projects, and behind-the-scenes work.
  • Serving as a tour guide, costumed interpreter, demonstrator, or program helper.

Interships at Zoar Village

Internships at Historic Zoar Village offer students and emerging professionals a hands-on opportunity to learn, serve, and grow in one of Ohio’s most meaningful historic settings. Interns gain practical experience in areas such as museum education, historic preservation, collections, archives, public programming, events, visitor services, marketing, and nonprofit operations while helping preserve and share Zoar’s remarkable story. Whether you are exploring a career in history, museums, education, preservation, tourism, or community engagement, an internship at Zoar provides meaningful work, mentorship, and the chance to make a lasting contribution to a National Historic Landmark.

About Interships

Both Historic Zoar Village and the Fort Laurens Museum offer internship programs. These programs can be personalized to fit the various needs of the student. Internships are available at the following levels: junior or senior in high school, vocational school, or homeschool, or undergraduate or graduate student in university or college. Students can obtain college credits through supervisor and professor approval. Standard internships will be ten weeks in length with an average of 8 hours per week. The duration and hours per day can be tailored to the intern’s needs. All completed internships will result in a letter of recommendation for the student.

Please email a cover letter that includes current academic level, a writing sample, a letter of recommendation from a teacher or professor, and, if interested in receiving academic credit, the requirements or guidelines of the program to zoarinfo@zca.org.
  • Marketing: social media, partnership development, general advertising outreach, graphic design: flyer and ad development, press releases and website content development
  • Collections: care and management, cataloging
  • Archives: cataloging, scanning and metadata, library organization
  • Education: school group program development to fit curriculum standards, lesson planning, school outreach
  • Program & Event Management: program development, event management, volunteer coordination
  • Museum Studies: daily operations, interpretation, adult outreach and program development, school outreach and program development 
  • Art: gallery interpretation, adult outreach and program development, school outreach and program development
Historic Zoar Village and the Fort Laurens Museum will offer internships in the listed categories. If you are interested in another project or if you wish to submit a proposal for a personalized internship, please send proposals to zoarinfo@zca.org.
Duties for each internship will vary. Interns may choose to work in more than one subcategory or blend categories and subcategories with supervisor approval to fit their career goals.
