History in Zoar

Those of us living in 21st-century America find it difficult to imagine living without religious freedom.

Yet, that is exactly what brought the Separatists to America in 1817. This group of over 200 German Separatists decided to “separate” themselves from the Lutheran Church, the official church of German state of Württemberg, rather than compromise their convictions. They left their friends, family, and homeland to seek religious refuge in America.

But that’s only the very beginning of the Separatists’ story. Visit us and you’ll take a journey back in time to understand the German Separatists who made this their home. You’ll see first-hand how they lived, worked, worshipped, and governed, and what made them so successful and what would eventually be their undoing. It is an exciting story—and we love being able to share it.
