History in Zoar

Those of us living in 21st century America find it difficult to imagine living without religious freedom.

Yet, that is exactly what brought the Zoarites to America in 1817. This group of nearly 200 German Separatists decided to “separate” themselves from the official state church of Germany rather than compromise their convictions. They left their friends, family and homeland to seek religious refuge in America.

But that’s only the very beginning of the Zoarites’ story. Visit us and you’ll take a journey back in time to understand the German Separatists who made this their home. You’ll see first-hand how they lived, worked, worshipped and governed, what made them so successful and what would eventually be their undoing. It’s an exciting story—and we love being able to share it.
